The Sacraments at Rye
Congregational Church

Baptism

Peter replied “repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The promise is for you and your children and all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.”  Acts 2:38-40

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River with these words: “You are my beloved in whom I am well pleased.”

Baptism is offered to all children and adults and is held during a worship service with the congregation as witnesses.  The congregation pledges to “walk with the child and parents” into the future promising love, help and prayer.  Similar promises are made at the time of adult baptism.

Baptism involves the entire congregation.  It is a glorious and happy celebration.  If you desire baptism for yourself or your child please call the church office or our pastor for a conversation about this Blessed Sacrament.  It would be our great privilege to perform this sacrament for you.

Communion

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them saying, “Drink from it, all of you.  This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-28.

Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month.

Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, was instituted by Jesus to recall and proclaim the love He poured out from the cross.  His followers are nourished by His real spiritual presence, encouraged by the sign and seal of His promises, that He has come near, and He has come in peace.

Jesus said: “Let the little children come unto me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the Kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:14)

Baptism is one of two sacraments given by Jesus during his lifetime. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River with these words: “You are my beloved, with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11) In baptism we heed God’s call and claim on our lives knowing we are not our own, but God’s.
