There is a new sound at Rye Congregational Church. Thirteen young voices raised in song. The new youth choir with members ranging in age from 6-12, came together in March, rehearsing every Sunday after church. They delight the congregation once a month with songs ranging from old spirituals like “All Night, All Day” to more contemporary Christian songs like “Give me Oil in my Lamp” and “This Little Light of Mine”. The songs often feature a few soloists and some choreographed movement.
These young children sing with a great deal of spirit. In fact, they wanted the word spirit in the name of the group. After considering names like The Hallelujah Chorus and Joyful Noise, they landed on Sparrow Spirit. They liked the references in the Bible to sparrows and the song, “His eye is on the sparrow…. and I know he watches me”. While sparrows are small, they are still important in the eyes of God. They also liked that the sparrows are cute, little songbirds, small but powerful. The birds are symbols of joy, simplicity, creativity, friendship, protection and productivity. Speaking of creativity, several members of the group helped to write new lyrics to a couple of the songs to make them more meaningful to them.
The Sparrow Spirit sang each month in church before breaking. Practices resume on September 8, 2019.
If you love to sing and are between 6 and 12, we would love to have you join us. We are also looking for a guitarist to accompany the group on occasion. If you are interested, please contact our office at (603) 964-4061 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
